Death 8

This game is on hold until I finish my degree.

It will be worth the wait.

Introduction

Concept art for D8 by Chris Hazeldine.

This is what we'd like the game to look like.

Death 8 (working title) is an online, multiplayer, shoot-em-up platformer game. Players fight to the death with an arsenal of weapons and items across large detailed maps, each with a huge assortment of fun and challenging obstacles. Maps can also be custom-made with a map maker application, which will be included with the game.

Death 8 is a work-in-progress. In fact, we've been designing it on and off since Death 7 was released in 2002. The first ideas for the game were primarily designed by Tom Turton, Dan Barton and Lewis Linehan, but more recently Tom and Lewis have taken the project to the next level. Tom will return as the game programmer, but this for this Death game, Lewis will be designing and providing the graphics.

  • Team-based game modes such as Capture the flag
  • Much larger and more detailed maps
  • New, simpler and more accurate control system
  • Much better game physics, which can be used by map editors
  • A variety of new and exciting map obstacles

One of our original ideas was that players could mix and match special abilities.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Death 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7?

'Death 8' is a working title. We do not plan on releasing the game with that name. Its predecessors still exist and most can be found in some shape or form floating around on the internet. We recommend Death 7 for the best example of Death-style gaming experience, although Death 8 will be a lot different.

What's new in Death 8?

Death 8 is a completely different than its predecessors in that it has been designed for many players as opposed to just two on the same keyboard (although Death 3 had three players). As a result the maps and graphics can be bigger and more detailed and we can concentrate more on the controls. Players will now use the keyboard and mouse to control their character (aiming with the mouse and moving with the keyboard). We're also planning on making a lot more wacky obstacles and building in a new physics engine so we can control factors like gravity in-game!

How much with it cost?

We're not sure if we even are going to sell D8 yet. If we do you can be sure that it will cost very little. We will probably release a free demo a few weeks prior to release. No guarantees, but we expect the game will be free.

What language is it being developed in?

Trick question! D8 is being made using a powerful games/multimedia authoring tool called Multimedia Fusion 2 Developer. This allows the user to make games without a single line of code. Hardcore programming nerds occasionally frown upon this, but it really is a powerful and not to mention, fast, way of 'programming'. But don't worry, the game producers come from a real programming background and have had much experience with this sort of software.

Wow that art is pretty old...

This game is on hold until I finish my degree.

However, as I'm learning DirectX this year there's a chance that Death 8 will be made with a 3D engine. The game will likely still be in 2D platform style however- think New Super Mario Bros for DS.

The good news about this is faster and much more detailed 3D graphics and better physics (MMF2 isn't totally brilliant at floating point maths).

No promises of course, but watch this space.
